Roughly how much does Chubb Universal Plus health insurance cost?
Inpatient plan premium per person per year, from the insurer's premium table (May 2026 edition), for selected age bands
| Age (years) | Plan 1 / Plan 2 / Plan 3 | Plan 4 / Plan 5 |
|---|---|---|
| 6 | 15,663 / 20,362 / 27,229 | 41,446 / 51,686 |
| 15 | 8,314 / 11,446 / 20,241 | 29,398 / 35,783 |
| 20 | 8,796 / 10,603 / 18,072 | 25,181 / 30,241 |
| 25 | 8,796 / 11,085 / 17,350 | 22,771 / 26,988 |
| 30 | 9,639 / 11,567 / 17,832 | 22,048 / 26,265 |
| 35 | 10,362 / 14,097 / 19,639 | 23,253 / 27,711 |
| 40 | 12,530 / 15,060 / 22,771 | 26,145 / 31,687 |
| 45 | 13,615 / 18,554 / 27,108 | 30,843 / 37,952 |
| 50 | 16,747 / 23,374 / 32,892 | 37,349 / 46,506 |
| 55 | 19,880 / 29,880 / 39,879 | 45,662 / 57,469 |
| 60 | 26,506 / 35,663 / 48,192 | 55,783 / 70,843 |
| 65 (renewals only) | 30,964 / 41,807 / 57,710 | 67,590 / 86,505 |
If you include OPD the premium goes up. For example, at age 30, Plan 1 goes from THB 9,639 to THB 16,024 and Plan 3 from THB 17,832 to THB 27,108. A year with no claims earns a 5% discount at renewal. The actual premium depends on age, plan, OPD and the insurer's underwriting decision. The amount you pay is the one shown on the premium quote.
A worked example to illustrate
Suppose you are 30 and stay in hospital for 3 nights at THB 6,000 per night, with surgery costs of THB 120,000 in the combined surgery category
| Item | Plan 1 (THB 9,639 per year) | Plan 3 (THB 17,832 per year) |
|---|---|---|
| Room costs for 3 nights: THB 18,000 | Pays 6,000 / difference 12,000 | Pays 15,000 / difference 3,000 |
| Surgery costs THB 120,000 | Pays 40,000 / difference 80,000 | Pays 100,000 / difference 20,000 |
| Total you pay yourself | THB 92,000 | THB 23,000 |
The premiums differ by THB 8,193 per year, but the amount you would have to pay yourself for this surgery differs by THB 69,000. This is a hypothetical example to illustrate. The amount actually paid depends on medical necessity and the insurer's assessment. A simple rule: choose your plan by the room and surgery costs at the hospital you will use, not by the overall limit per stay.
Who is Chubb Universal Plus for?
- Working people who use social security or the gold card (Universal Coverage Scheme) and want the option of staying at a private hospital
- People buying their first health policy, with a premium budget of a few thousand baht up to the low tens of thousands per year
- People who already have health insurance or group insurance and want another policy to help pay the part that goes over
- People who also want OPD and accept per-stay limits that are not very high
Who should not buy this plan yet?
- People who use a private hospital with high room rates but choose Plan 1–2. The sub-limits for room, treatment and surgery may not be enough, and you pay the difference yourself.
- People who want childbirth cover. Pregnancy and childbirth are in the general exclusions. This plan has no childbirth cover.
- Parents who want to insure a child aged 6–15. This age group must pay a 30% copayment on the eligible expenses of every claim, and children under 6 cannot apply.
- People over 60, or with a pre-existing condition. This plan accepts new applications up to age 60 and does not cover conditions that existed before you took out cover.
- People who want limits of several million baht per year for serious illness. The limits in this policy are set per hospital stay, and chemotherapy and radiotherapy have annual caps depending on the plan.
What limitations should you check before deciding?
- Sub-limits by category. The overall limit per stay is high, but each category has its own cap. For example, in Plan 1 combined surgery costs are capped at THB 40,000 per stay.
- Chemotherapy, radiotherapy and dialysis have annual caps. Plan 1 pays each item up to THB 40,000 per year, which may not be enough if you have continuous cancer treatment.
- 30-day waiting period: illness in the first 30 days is not covered.
- 120-day waiting period for tumours, cysts, cancer, haemorrhoids, hernias, pterygium or cataracts, removal of the tonsils, stones, varicose veins and endometriosis.
- From age 45 you must attach a health check report with the application form.
- Check-up costs before or after a hospital stay must be paid upfront, then you submit the claim documents within 30 days.
- MRI, PET and CT scans must be reported to the insurer and approved in advance.
- In some cases you must pay upfront even at a network hospital if the insurer needs to check your history of pre-existing conditions.
- Renewal premiums can be adjusted according to age band and claims history. The policy can be renewed up to age 99, subject to the insurer's criteria.

Frequently asked questions
How does applying at 44 differ from applying at 45?
From age 45 you need to attach a health check report or treatment history to the application form. Age is calculated as the policy year minus the year of birth.
What if the hospital's room costs more than the limit?
You can stay in that room, but you pay anything above the daily room limit yourself, or you can choose a room priced within your plan's limit.
If I fall ill on a trip abroad, can I claim?
Yes, if the trip is no more than 45 days and you are not in the United States. You must pay first and claim afterwards. If documents are not in Thai or English, they must be translated by an accredited body, at your own cost.
If I don't claim all year, do I get anything?
Yes, a 5% premium discount at renewal for policies with no claims in the previous year.
Can foreigners working in Thailand buy it?
Yes, if you stay in Thailand for at least 6 months within a 12-month period. A copy of your passport is used with the application.
Who approves underwriting and claims?
Underwriting and claim payments are decided by Chubb Samaggi Insurance. As your broker, Prakanthai.com helps coordinate and follows up on your case.
