Highlights: many categories of inpatient expenses are paid at actual cost, within an overall limit of THB 300,000–1,000,000 per year
A high fever that hasn't come down in three days, and the doctor admits you to hospital. A private room costs several thousand baht a night, plus medicines and lab tests, and the bill ends up tens of thousands of baht more than your employer's benefits pay.
If you buy extra inpatient health insurance yourself, what room rate should you choose, and what does this plan not pay for?
Bangkok Insurance inpatient health insurance: who is it for and how much does it cost?
Short answer: Bangkok Insurance's inpatient (IPD) health insurance suits Thai nationals aged 16–60 who want a medical expense limit for hospital stays on top of the benefits they already have. It covers room charges of THB 4,000–8,000 per day and pays many categories of treatment at actual cost, within an overall limit of THB 300,000–1,000,000 per year. Premiums from THB 9,000 per year (data as at 11 October 2026). The actual premium depends on your age and plan.

Roughly how much is the inpatient health insurance premium?
Annual premiums, including stamp duty and VAT, data as at 11 October 2026
| Age (years) | Plan 1 / Plan 2 / Plan 3 (THB) |
|---|---|
| 16–25 | 9,000 / 13,000 / 18,500 |
| 26–30 | 9,500 / 13,500 / 19,000 |
| 31–35 | 9,500 / 14,500 / 20,500 |
| 36–40 | 11,000 / 18,000 / 25,500 |
| 41–50 | 12,000 / 20,000 / 28,000 |
| 51–55 | 15,000 / 22,500 / 28,500 |
| 56–60 | 17,000 / 24,500 / 35,000 |
| 61–70 (renewals only) | 17,000 / 24,500 / 35,000 |
Every figure is a starting premium. Premiums go up by age band when you renew. The actual premium depends on your age, the plan and the insurer's underwriting decision; the figure on your quote is the one that applies.
Worked example: if the room costs more than the limit, how much do you pay yourself?
Say you are 33 and choose Plan 2 at a premium of THB 14,500 per year (about THB 1,208 a month on average = 14,500 ÷ 12), then spend 4 nights in hospital in a private room at THB 7,500 a night.
- Room charges paid by the plan: 6,000 × 4 = THB 24,000
- Room charge difference you pay yourself: (7,500 − 6,000) × 4 = THB 6,000
- Medicines, lab tests and doctor's fees: paid at actual cost, as long as the total for the year stays within THB 700,000
This example is for illustration only. The amount actually paid depends on the insurer's claim assessment. A simple rule: choose your plan by the room rate at the hospital you normally use, not by the cheapest premium.
Who is inpatient health insurance for?
- Thai nationals aged 16–60 who want a higher inpatient medical limit on top of their employer's benefits or social security
- Freelancers and business owners who have no medical benefits from an employer
- People who use private hospitals and know the room rate at their usual hospital, so they can pick a plan whose room limit matches it
- People who are currently in good health, with no illness being treated at the moment
Who should not buy this plan yet?
- Over 60: this plan accepts new applicants aged 16–60; ages 61–70 are for renewals only
- People with a chronic illness or a condition that has not yet healed: the insurer does not pay for an illness or injury that had not healed before the policy first took effect
- People who want everyday outpatient doctor visits covered: this plan pays outpatient costs only for an accident (within 24 hours) and for check-ups within 30 days before or after a hospital stay
- People worried about the cost of cancer treatment with chemotherapy or radiotherapy, or about dialysis costs: none of the 3 plans covers these categories
- People who are not Thai nationals: this plan insures Thai nationals
Limits to check before you decide
- 30-day waiting period: any illness that arises in the first 30 days after the policy first takes effect is not covered (accidents are not subject to this condition)
- 120-day waiting period for 8 groups of conditions: tumours, cysts or cancers of any kind; haemorrhoids; hernias; pterygium or cataracts; removal of the tonsils or adenoids; stones of any kind; varicose veins in the legs; and endometriosis
- Room charges have a daily cap: if the room costs more than the plan's limit, you pay the difference yourself
- Physical rehabilitation, dialysis, radiotherapy and chemotherapy are not covered under any of the 3 plans
- Premiums rise by age band: when you renew into a new age band, the premium changes according to the table
- Treatment abroad: covered only for sudden, unforeseeable illness or injury while you are abroad that requires admission to hospital as an inpatient

Frequently asked questions
I already have group insurance through my employer. Can I buy more?
Yes. Personal health insurance tops up the limits where your employer's benefits fall short, and it keeps covering you even if you leave your job. Declare your existing insurance truthfully when you apply.
Do I need a medical check-up before applying?
Send us your details first, and our team will tell you which documents the insurer needs. Underwriting follows the insurer's own criteria.
If I have cataract surgery 2 months after taking out the policy, can I claim?
Cataracts are in the group of conditions with a 120-day waiting period from when the policy first takes effect. If it happens within those 120 days, this plan does not pay.
If I apply at 60, until what age can I renew?
You can keep renewing until age 70. For ages 61–70, the Plan 1 / 2 / 3 premiums are THB 17,000 / 24,500 / 35,000. Renewal is subject to the insurer's terms.
If I'm admitted to hospital, do I have to pay upfront first?
It depends on the hospital and the insurer's assessment. Contact our team before you are admitted whenever you can, so we can help check the claim procedure.
