How to Claim Thailand's National Disaster Insurance

How to Claim Thailand's National Disaster Insurance

The water has gone down and the house is damaged. You know you're entitled to something under the national disaster insurance, but not where to report it, which documents you need, or when the money arrives. Some people report a claim, wait two weeks, and get nothing, because they assumed the clock started on the day they reported.

This guide covers only the claim process: channels, documents and payment times. For who is covered and how much the scheme pays, see Thailand National Disaster Insurance.

How do you claim Thailand's national disaster insurance?

Short answer: You can report a claim through 4 channels: the ThaiNatCat.org website, LINE OA @Thainatcat, the call centre on +66 2 012 5555, and claim points in your area. Prepare your national ID card, proof of ownership of the home, the house registration (if you have one) and photos of the damage. The THB 10,000 initial payment is made within 15 days of the insurer receiving complete information and documents, not from the day you report the claim.

Online claims use the ThaiD app to verify your identity. You choose the type of disaster, enter the details, attach photos and documents, and keep the claim number to track progress. Watch out for scams: the scheme charges no fees, never asks for an OTP, and official SMS messages contain no links. If in doubt, call the DDPM on 1784.

Which documents do you need?

For the initial payment

  1. National ID card of the person entitled to claim
  2. Proof of ownership of the home
  3. House registration for the damaged home (if you have one)
  4. Photos showing the damage to the home
  5. Bank account details or passbook, if you can't receive money by PromptPay linked to your national ID number

To claim more when the damage exceeds the initial payment

  1. Photos showing further detail of the damage
  2. A list of the damaged property or parts of the home
  3. Quotations, receipts or other evidence of repair costs (if you have them)
  4. Any other documents or evidence the insurer or the scheme asks for

Compensation is based on the actual value of the damage, within the policy limits and conditions. Photos that show both the whole room and close-ups of the damage help the assessment go faster.

How soon are you paid?

Type of paymentPaid withinCounted from
Initial THB 10,000 for home damage15 daysThe date the insurer receives complete information and documents
Additional payment for home damage15 daysAfter the insurer assesses the damage and agrees the amount with you, and receives complete information and documents
Death benefit15 daysThe date the insurer receives complete information and documents

Worked example: THB 45,000 of home damage

  • You report the claim on 10 October but complete your documents on 14 October. The THB 10,000 initial payment is counted from 14 October, so it should arrive by 14 + 15 = 29 October
  • The insurer assesses the damage at THB 45,000 and agrees the amount with you. The additional 45,000 − 10,000 = THB 35,000 is paid within 15 days of complete documents
  • In total you receive 10,000 + 35,000 = THB 45,000, within the THB 100,000 limit per household per event

This example is for illustration only. Actual amounts depend on the insurer's damage assessment and the policy terms.

What slows down payment?

  • Incomplete documents: the 15 days don't start until the insurer has complete information and documents
  • Unclear photos: if they show only part of the damage, or don't show which home it is, the insurer will ask for more
  • No PromptPay linked to your national ID, and no bank account details attached
  • The damage amount isn't agreed yet: the additional payment is made after the insurer assesses the damage and agrees it with you

The best way to speed things up is to send every document on the list above the first time you report, and keep your claim number to track progress.

You already have home insurance. Can you still claim from the scheme?

Yes, if you meet the eligibility criteria and the damage falls within the scheme's rules and policy conditions. For home insurance you bought yourself, claim with that insurer through its usual channels.

The national scheme pays only for the building and fixed installations. For cover that includes contents, see Rak Ban home insurance with flood cover and Viriyah Home 999.

Want us to check your existing home insurance? What do you need to send?

Just 2 things

  1. The schedule page of your home or fire insurance policy
  2. Photos of the damage

We tell you how far your policy covers flood, and coordinate the claim if we arranged the policy. We reply within one working day, in English or Thai.

Frequently asked questions

It's been more than 15 days since I reported the claim. Why haven't I been paid?

The 15 days count from when the insurer receives complete information and documents, not from when you reported the claim. If the insurer asks for more documents, the count starts once they are complete. Track progress with your claim number.

I don't have PromptPay linked to my national ID. Can I still be paid?

Yes. Attach your bank account details or passbook to the claim documents.

I don't have a house registration. Can I claim?

The house registration is required only if you have one. Make sure you have proof of ownership, your national ID card and photos of the damage.

I've received the initial payment. Can I claim more?

Yes, if the actual damage is more than THB 10,000. Send further evidence, such as a list of the damage and repair quotations. The insurer assesses and pays the actual damage, up to THB 100,000 per household per event in total.

Who approves and pays claims?

The participating insurers assess the damage and pay claims, supervised by the OIC. Prakanthai does not handle claims for this scheme.
