A foreign partner or parent has to renew the O-A visa every year, and the embassy or immigration asks for proof of health insurance that covers the whole stay in Thailand. But when you go to buy it, premiums for a plan with no deductible climb with age.
Can a plan with premiums in the thousands of baht really be used to apply for the visa, and how much would you pay yourself if you had to stay in hospital?
Chubb O-A visa health insurance: who is it for and how much does it cost?
In short: Chubb Samaggi Insurance's O-A visa health insurance, the Long Stay Visa Health Plan, suits foreigners aged 18–80 who need insurance to apply for an O-A visa (1-year visa) and accept a deductible of THB 100,000 or 200,000 each time. A worked example to illustrate
An insured aged 65 who chooses Plan 2 (inpatient THB 500,000 per year)
- THB 100,000 deductible: THB 20,800 per year
- THB 200,000 deductible: THB 10,400 per year
Suppose you are admitted to hospital once and eligible treatment costs total THB 300,000
- THB 100,000 deductible: you pay THB 100,000 and the insurer considers paying the remaining THB 200,000, within the room limit of THB 5,000 per day
- THB 200,000 deductible: you pay THB 200,000 and the insurer considers paying THB 100,000
You save THB 10,400 per year in premium, but if you are actually admitted to hospital you must bear another THB 100,000 each time. This is a hypothetical example to illustrate. A simple rule: choose a deductible equal to the reserve you can genuinely afford to pay on the day you have to stay in hospital.
Who is Long Stay Visa Health Plan for?
- Foreigners aged 18–80 who are applying for or renewing an O-A visa and need proof of health insurance
- Foreigners who already have a reserve for the first portion of treatment costs and want insurance to cover the part above it
- Thais who handle visa renewals for a foreign spouse or parent and want an annual premium they can keep under control
- People who want to be able to renew up to age 100
Who should not buy this plan yet?
- People without a reserve of THB 100,000 or more for the first portion of treatment costs. Every plan has a mandatory deductible, and it is deducted every time you are admitted to hospital.
- People with chronic or incurable conditions. Conditions that existed before the start of cover are not covered, unless the insurer accepts them in writing at the time of application.
- People who need cover outside Thailand. This plan covers Thailand only.
- People who already hold a health policy from Chubb Samaggi Insurance. You can hold only 1.
- People who want cover for organ transplant surgery, bone marrow transplants or dialysis. The notes in the document say these are not covered, even though the benefit table has these categories. Treat them as not covered until the insurer confirms otherwise in writing.
What limitations should you check before deciding?
- The deductible applies each time, not per year. If you are admitted to hospital twice in one year, you bear the deductible twice. The document defines the deductible as applying to each treatment or each hospital admission. Ask the insurer to state on the premium quote whether outpatient treatment also has the deductible deducted.
- 30-day waiting period: illness in the first 30 days is not covered, while accidents are covered from the policy start date.
- 120-day waiting period for tumours, cancer, cysts, haemorrhoids, hernias, pterygium, pinguecula, cataracts, removal of the tonsils, stones, varicose veins and endometriosis.
- Conditions previously diagnosed, or with symptoms before cover started, are not paid, including conditions for which you have taken prescription medication.
- In renewal years, the premium may rise up to the maximum standard rate depending on the previous year's claims ratio, or the insurer may decline to renew by giving 30 days' notice.
- The insurer may decline you, or accept you with additional exclusions, according to its underwriting criteria.
- Key exclusions include pregnancy and childbirth, dental, vision, psychiatric care, alternative medicine, health check-ups, dangerous sports and injury while blood alcohol is 150 milligram percent or above.

Frequently asked questions
What documents do I get for the visa application after I buy?
You receive a certificate of insurance once the purchase is complete, and the policy details are sent to the Thai General Insurance Association's system so immigration officers can check that the policy is still in force.
When does the policy start?
You need to send the signed health application form with a copy of your passport, and pay the annual premium first. The policy takes effect and documents are issued once the insurer approves, so allow some time before the date you apply for the visa.
If I apply at 79, until what age can I renew?
You can apply in the first year up to age 80 and renew up to age 100. Premiums for ages 81–100 are renewal rates only.
If I'm admitted to hospital, do I have to pay upfront?
The insured receives a card for use at contracted hospitals, but the insured is responsible for the THB 100,000 or 200,000 deductible on each occasion.
Do I have to wait 30 days if I slip and fall at home?
No. Injury from an accident is covered from the policy start date. The waiting period applies to illness.
Who approves underwriting and claims?
Underwriting and claim payments are decided by Chubb Samaggi Insurance. As your broker, Prakanthai.com helps coordinate and follows up on your case.
