Many retired foreigners have enough savings to pay for minor treatment themselves, but worry about a serious illness where the bill runs into the millions, while standard visa insurance has an inpatient limit of only a few hundred thousand baht.

If you accept a large deductible, how much higher a limit do you get, and is it worth the risk of paying that amount yourself?

In short: Chubb Samaggi Insurance's high-limit health insurance for foreigners, the Long Stay Visa Health Premium plan, suits foreigners living in Thailand on an O-A visa who have enough reserves to pay the first THB 300,000–1,000,000 of treatment per stay themselves. Health insurance for foreigners with a THB 3.5 million limit: roughly how much is the premium?

Premium per person per year, from the insurer's sales brochure

Age (years)Plan 1 (deductible 300,000) / Plan 2 (500,000)Plan 3 (deductible 1,000,000)

Premiums are adjusted by age band every year. The actual premium depends on your age, the plan and the insurer's underwriting decision; the figure on your quote is the one that applies.

A worked example to illustrate

For an insured aged 55, comparing Plan 1 (THB 27,600 per year) with Plan 3 (THB 14,500 per year), the premium differs by THB 13,100 per year.

Assumed eligible treatment cost per stayPlan 1: you pay / insurer assesses for paymentPlan 3: you pay / insurer assesses for payment
THB 200,000200,000 / 0200,000 / 0
THB 800,000300,000 / 500,000800,000 / 0
THB 2,000,000300,000 / 1,700,0001,000,000 / 1,000,000

All of this sits within the room limit of THB 5,000 per day and the overall limit of THB 3,500,000 per year. These are hypothetical examples to give you a picture. A simple rule: the deductible you choose should not be more than the money you could really pay on the day you have to be admitted to hospital, because a bill in the hundreds of thousands of baht almost never leads to a claim on this plan.

Who is Long Stay Visa Health Premium for?

  • Foreigners on an O-A visa who worry about a serious illness where treatment costs run into the millions of baht
  • People with enough savings to pay for everyday treatment themselves, who want insurance only for the big bills
  • People who want a higher annual limit than standard visa insurance, at a premium in the tens of thousands of baht
  • Foreign families with children aged 1–17 who are also living in Thailand

Who should not buy this plan yet?

  • People without reserves of THB 300,000 or more: every plan has a compulsory deductible for each hospital stay
  • People who want to claim for small to medium treatment costs: bills below the deductible get no payment from the inpatient benefit
  • People with a chronic or incurable condition: conditions that existed before the policy started are not covered
  • People who need cover outside Thailand: cover applies in Thailand only
  • People who want a high outpatient limit: OPD has a limit of THB 2,000, which can be used no more than once a day

What limitations should you check before deciding?

  1. The deductible applies to each hospital stay. If you are admitted twice for different illnesses, you bear the deductible twice. A repeat stay for the same illness within 90 days of leaving hospital counts as one stay.
  2. The room charge is limited to THB 5,000 per day on every plan. If you stay in a more expensive room, you pay the difference yourself
  3. 30-day waiting period: illness in the first 30 days is not covered.
  4. 120-day waiting period for tumours, cysts, cancer, haemorrhoids, hernias, pterygium or cataracts, removal of the tonsils or adenoids, stones, varicose veins and endometriosis.
  5. MRI, PET and CT scans must be reported to the insurer and approved in advance.
  6. Renewal premiums can be adjusted according to age band and claims history. You can renew up to age 100, subject to the insurer's underwriting criteria
  7. Key exclusions include pregnancy and childbirth, dental care, vision care, psychiatric care, alternative medicine, health check-ups and cosmetic surgery

For the minimum limit an O-A visa requires, and the difference between a new application and a renewal, read How much cover does O-A visa health insurance need? If you want a lower deductible than this (THB 100,000 or 200,000) in exchange for an inpatient limit in the hundreds of thousands of baht, see O-A visa health insurance, Chubb Long Stay Visa Health Plan.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the premium for children aged 1–17 higher than for adults aged 18–50?

It is a rate the insurer sets by age band in its premium table, for example on Plan 1: THB 23,700 for a child and THB 17,600 for an adult aged 18–50. If you are buying for the whole family, ask for a separate quote for each person.

I already have insurance from my home country. Can I use both together?

Yes, if the terms of your existing policy allow it. The insurer will return your original receipts with confirmation of the amount already paid, so that you can claim the remainder from the other policy, for example the deductible of this plan.

Do this year's and next year's deductibles count together?

No. The limit and the counting of benefits start again each policy year, and the deductible applies to each hospital stay.

Within how many days must I send in claim documents?

Within 30 days of the date you leave hospital, using the original receipts. If a document is in neither Thai nor English, it must be translated by an accredited organisation.

Who approves underwriting and claims?

Underwriting and claim payments are decided by Chubb Samaggi Insurance. As your broker, Prakanthai.com helps coordinate and follows up on your case.
