Highlights: Class 1 dealer repair for EVs aged 2–5 years, premiums set model by model, and the same premium for every car age in this range

Your EV is two years old and the first-year insurance that came with the car is about to run out. The renewal notice from your current insurer costs more than you expected, and many insurers still won't take some models.

If you switch to Class 1 dealer-repair cover with Viriyah, is your model in the table, how much is the premium, and which conditions differ from insurance for a petrol car?

Viriyah EV Class 1 insurance for cars aged 2–5 years: who is it for, and how much is the premium?

In short: Viriyah Insurance's EV Class 1 dealer-repair insurance for cars aged 2–5 years suits electric car owners whose model is in the insurer's table and who want to keep using dealer repair. Every figure is a starting premium. "–" means there is no business-use rate for that model. The sum insured goes down as the car gets older, but each model's premium is the same for every car age from 2 to 5 years. The actual premium depends on the model, the sum insured and the insurer's underwriting decision; the quote is what counts.

Worked example: how is the sum insured worked out, and how much more do you pay for business use?

Say you have a BYD DOLPHIN (up to 175 hp) that is 3 years old and currently worth THB 375,000

  • Sum insured = 375,000 × 80% = THB 300,000 (within the THB 270,000–320,000 range for a 3-year-old car)
  • Private use: premium THB 28,400 per year
  • Business use: premium THB 31,300 per year, so you pay 31,300 − 28,400 = THB 2,900 more
  • If the car is stolen or written off, you receive the sum insured of THB 300,000, not the car's value of THB 375,000

This is an illustration; the actual sum insured and premium are the ones on your quote. The simple rule: for the same model, the older the car, the lower the sum insured, but the premium does not go down with it between 2 and 5 years.

Who is Viriyah EV Class 1 insurance for?

  • Owners of electric cars aged 2–5 years whose model is in the table and who want to keep using dealer repair
  • People renewing for year 2 or later who want to switch from the insurance that came with the car
  • People who use an EV for business and want a rate that matches how the car is actually used
  • Families who carry several passengers, because personal accident and medical expenses cover is THB 200,000 per person, for every seat

Who should not buy this plan yet?

  • Cars over 5 years old: this table covers cars aged 2–5 years
  • New cars (red plates) or cars in their first year: these use a different table; see Viriyah EV Class 1 insurance for new cars (red plates)
  • Models not in the table: for example, Hyundai, Kia and Nissan Leaf are not in this plan's table for cars aged 2–5 years
  • People who want a sum insured equal to what they paid for the car: this plan sets the sum insured at 80% of the car's value
  • People who don't want to name drivers or share their driving record: this plan requires named drivers and driving-behaviour data

Limits to check before you decide

  1. You must name 1–5 drivers and send a copy of each one's driving licence. The insurer may adjust the premium or decline cover based on this information.
  2. The sum insured is set at 80% of the car's value, including standard factory equipment but not added accessories
  3. Added accessories raise the premium, according to the insurer's premium tariff
  4. Business-use cars must be rated under code E12, which is for business use only; its premiums are mostly higher than for private use
  5. The insurer reserves the right to adjust the premium if the car's price changes
