You have just booked your first electric car. The salesperson says it comes with free insurance, but when you ask for details, the only answer is “Class 1, dealer repair”. Nobody tells you the sum insured, or what you would pay if you bought the insurance yourself.
If you want to compare it with the free insurance, or your car didn't come with any, how does Viriyah price its EV insurance for new cars (red plates), and what are the conditions?

Every figure is a starting premium. The actual premium depends on the model, the sum insured and the insurer's underwriting decision. The quote is what counts.
Worked example: you buy an MG4 for THB 700,000. What are the sum insured and the premium?
Say you buy an MG 4 (up to 175 hp) for THB 700,000, for private use
- Sum insured = 700,000 × 80% = THB 560,000 (within the THB 450,000–870,000 sum insured range)
- Premium THB 31,900 per year, about THB 2,658 a month on average (31,900 ÷ 12)
- If the car is stolen or written off in the first year, you receive the sum insured of THB 560,000. The difference from the car's price, 700,000 − 560,000 = THB 140,000, is not covered
This is an illustration; the actual sum insured and premium are the ones on your quote. The simple rule: if you are still paying off the car, know this difference from day one.
Viriyah EV insurance for new cars (red plates): who is it for?
- People who have just bought a new electric car whose model is in the insurer's table
- People who didn't get free insurance from the showroom, or who want to compare it with the free insurance before taking delivery of the car
- People who buy an EV for business use and want a rate that matches how the car is actually used
- Owners of models that the table for cars aged 2–5 years doesn't include, such as Hyundai IONIQ 5, Kia EV5/EV9, Nissan Leaf, OMODA C5 and JAECOO 6
Who should not buy this plan yet?
- Cars that have been in use for more than 1 year: these use the table for cars aged 2–5 years instead; see Viriyah EV Class 1 insurance for cars aged 2–5 years
- Models not in the table: for example, BYD SEALION 7 is not in this plan's new-car (red plate) table
- People who want a sum insured equal to the car's price: this plan sets the sum insured at 80% of the car's price
- People who don't want to name drivers or share their driving record: this plan requires named drivers and driving-behaviour data
- People who fit a lot of added accessories and don't want to pay a higher premium: added accessories raise the premium
Limits to check before you decide
- You must name 1–5 drivers and send a copy of each one's driving licence, plus their driving behaviour data from the Office of Insurance Commission (OIC). The insurer may adjust the premium or decline cover based on this information.
- The sum insured is set at 80% of the car's value, including standard factory equipment but not added accessories
- Added accessories raise the premium, according to the insurer's premium tariff
- Business-use cars must be rated under code E12, which is for business use only; its premiums are higher than for private use
- The insurer reserves the right to adjust the premium if the car's price changes

Frequently asked questions
Can I buy insurance before I take delivery of the car?
Yes. Send us the car details from your booking form first, and our team will arrange for the policy to start on the day you take delivery.
Do you have to name drivers for a new car (red plates) too?
Yes. This electric vehicle (EV) insurance plan requires at least 1 and no more than 5 named drivers, with copies of their driving licences and their driving behaviour data.
What will the premium be when you renew for year 2?
Year 2 uses the table for cars aged 2–5 years. According to the tables as at the reference date, most premiums there are lower than in the new-car (red plate) table: for example, a BYD DOLPHIN is THB 29,500 in the new-car table and THB 28,400 in the table for cars aged 2–5 years. The sum insured also goes down as the car gets older.
Where are Teslas repaired?
This plan is dealer repair. To learn about the body shops Tesla certifies, read Tesla Approved Body Shop (TAB)
Can I get compulsory motor insurance (CMI) at the same time?
Yes. Mention it when you ask for a quote. If you want to check that the cover dates line up with your tax renewal first, read New CMI rules from 1 September 2026: match your cover dates to your vehicle tax
