A foreign husband has worked in Thailand for years and rides a motorbike to work every day. His wife wants to buy him accident cover, but when she reads the conditions, some plans say they accept Thai nationals only.
Foreigners can buy personal accident insurance in Thailand, but not every plan. This guide sets out which of the plans we arrange accept foreigners, which don't, and how to choose.
Can foreigners buy personal accident insurance in Thailand?
Short answer: Yes, if you live in Thailand legally and your age and occupation meet the plan's criteria. Among the plans we arrange, five from Bangkok Insurance state that they accept foreigners, with premiums from THB 660 a year and entry up to age 75. Some other plans accept Thai nationals only. The simple rule: check the nationality and residence conditions before you look at the premium.
Which plans accept foreigners?
| Plan | Entry age | Key points / premium from (per year) |
|---|---|---|
| PA Me Style Family First | 0–60 | Sum insured THB 300,000–1,000,000, no medical expenses, from THB 660 |
| PA Me Style PA for All | 0–60 | 8 plans, THB 100,000–1,000,000, medical expenses THB 5,000–100,000 per accident, from THB 1,160 |
| PA Me Style Fit Style | 0–60 | Covers hazardous sports, medical THB 80,000–100,000 per accident, from THB 3,660 |

| PA Happy 45 Plus | 45–75 | Inpatient and outpatient accident medical cover, renewable to 100, from THB 4,400; foreigners need a Work Permit or Retirement Certificate |
Premiums as at 14–15 October 2026, including stamp duty. All figures are starting premiums. The actual premium depends on the plan, age, occupation and the insurer's underwriting.
Which plans are for Thai nationals only?
The conditions of the following plans state that they accept Thai nationals only, so foreigners can't apply:
- Accident insurance at THB 222 and THB 159 a year
- Super Save cancer insurance
- Bangkok Insurance inpatient health insurance
- Telemedicine health insurance
- Cyber insurance
Can you use accident insurance for an O-A visa?
It isn't a substitute. O-A visa health insurance must cover medical expenses, both outpatient and inpatient. Personal accident insurance covers accidents only, not illness. For visa insurance, see our O-A visa health insurance guide.
Can foreigners buy health insurance in Thailand?
Yes, but you need a plan that accepts foreigners. Many standard health plans are for Thai nationals only. Examples of plans written for foreigners are Bangkok Insurance's health insurance for foreigners, which accepts ages 14 days to 75, and AXA's EasyCare Visa, which accepts ages 15 days to 80.
Both pay medical costs for illness and accidents, but neither covers pre-existing conditions that were not cured before the policy started, and both have a 30-day waiting period for illness. Used together with accident insurance, the health policy pays the medical bills and the accident policy pays a lump sum for death or disability.
Riding a motorbike every day: what should you check?
Several plans pay only half the standard sum insured for accidents while riding or riding pillion on a motorbike, including PA for All, Fit Style, Family First and PA Happy 45 Plus. Happy PA states that it covers riding or riding pillion on a motorbike up to the sum insured, under the policy terms.
Worked example: THB 1,000,000 accident cover, age 40, office worker
- Happy PA without medical expenses: THB 1,000,000 cover, premium THB 1,550 a year
- Happy PA with medical expenses: THB 100,000 medical, premium THB 4,000 a year, an extra 4,000 − 1,550 = THB 2,450
- PA for All Plan 8 (Group A): THB 1,000,000 cover, THB 100,000 medical per accident, premium THB 4,660 a year, but THB 500,000 for motorbike accidents
This example is for illustration only. If you already have health insurance or medical benefits from your employer, a plan without medical expenses gives you a high accident sum insured for a low premium.
How does accident insurance differ from health insurance?
| Item | Personal accident | Health |
|---|---|---|
| Covers | Injury, disability or death from an accident | Illness and accidents, depending on the plan |
| How it pays | Lump sum based on the sum insured; some plans add accident medical expenses | Actual medical costs within the limits |
| Typical premium | Hundreds to a few thousand baht | Higher, and more dependent on age |
For foreigners living in Thailand long term, the two work together. Health insurance pays medical bills; accident insurance gives your family a lump sum after a serious accident. If you travel abroad often, Happy PA states that it covers you 24 hours a day worldwide, at work, at leisure and while travelling.
What should you check before applying?
- Residence status: you must live in Thailand legally, and some plans ask for extra documents such as a Work Permit or Retirement Certificate
- Age: most plans accept applicants up to 60. Over 60, PA Happy 45 Plus accepts applicants up to 75
- Occupation: some plans accept mainly office-based work only
- Number of policies: many plans allow no more than 2
- Medical expenses: some plans have none and pay only for death or disability
