────────────────────

Your car is more than ten years old, Class 1 insurers won't renew it or will only do so at a premium out of proportion to the car's value, and with Class 3 alone you worry you'd get nothing if the car were stolen or caught fire. Which should you choose?

Tokio Marine Safety Insurance's 2+ for older cars is another option for older vehicles, but there are conditions on vehicle type and modifications that you should check first.

■ Tokio Marine Safety Insurance 2+ for older cars: who is it for and how much does it cost?

Short answer: Tokio Marine Safety Insurance 2+ suits owners of privately used saloons, pickups or vans up to 20 years old who want more cover than Class 3. It covers the car in a collision with a land vehicle where the other party can be identified, plus theft and fire, with a sum insured of THB 50,000–300,000. Premiums start at THB 6,200 per year (sum insured THB 50,000, information as at 4 August 2026). The actual premium depends on the vehicle type, the model and the sum insured you choose.

■ Roughly how much is the Tokio Marine Safety Insurance 2+ premium?

Starting annual premiums, including tax and stamp duty, excluding compulsory motor insurance (CMI), as at 4 August 2026 (rates apply until 31 December 2027 or until the insurer announces a change)

Saloons (code 110) and pickups (code 320)
• Sum insured THB 50,000 → from THB 6,200
• Sum insured THB 100,000 → from THB 6,500
• Sum insured THB 150,000 → from THB 6,800
• Sum insured THB 200,000 → from THB 7,100
• Sum insured THB 250,000 → from THB 7,400
• Sum insured THB 300,000 → from THB 7,700

Vans (code 210)
• Sum insured THB 50,000 → from THB 6,600
• Sum insured THB 100,000 → from THB 6,900
• Sum insured THB 150,000 → from THB 7,200
• Sum insured THB 200,000 → from THB 7,500
• Sum insured THB 250,000 → from THB 7,800
• Sum insured THB 300,000 → from THB 8,100

The actual premium depends on the vehicle type, the model and the sum insured you choose. These rates apply to vehicle groups 3–5 as defined by the insurer and already include the no-claims discount, the dashcam discount and the app discount. The amount you actually pay is the one shown on the quote.

CMI is bought separately; prices include tax and stamp duty
• Saloon, code 110 → THB 645.21
• Van, code 210 → THB 1,182.35
• Pickup, code 320 (up to 3 tonnes) → THB 967.28

A worked example to illustrate

▸ Saloon with a THB 200,000 sum insured, bought together with CMI
7,100 + 645.21 = THB 7,745.21 per year

▸ Is a higher sum insured worth it?
A simple rule: every THB 50,000 added to the sum insured adds THB 300 to the starting premium
For example, raising a saloon's sum insured from THB 100,000 to 200,000 increases the premium from THB 6,500 to 7,100
Pay THB 600 more per year for THB 100,000 more cover on the car

3) Only vehicle groups 3–5 as defined by the insurer are accepted
Send us your car model first so we can check it is in an accepted group

4) This price already includes discounts
Includes the no-claims and dashcam discounts

■ What do you need to send to get the actual premium for your car?

1) A photo of the front page of the registration book
2) The front page of your current policy

Our team will send you a written quote within the working day, showing the premium including tax and stamp duty, plus CMI if you want them together. If one plan is better value, we'll tell you straight. If the conditions differ, we'll explain them before you pay.

■ Frequently asked questions

Q: My car is 18 years old. Do I need to take it for an inspection first?
A: This campaign waives the vehicle inspection, as long as the car is no more than 20 years old and is in a vehicle group the insurer accepts.

Q: Can I insure a company car my employer lets me use?
A: Yes. This plan accepts company cars, but if the car is registered to a juristic person, it does not meet this plan's conditions.

Q: Can I insure a pickup with a Carryboy canopy or a tonneau cover?
A: The conditions only list commercial equipment such as cages, rails, beams, cargo boxes and reinforced leaf springs. Canopies and tonneau covers have to be checked with the insurer car by car. You can send us photos of the car to check first.

Q: Can I renew CMI at the same time?
A: Yes, just mention it when you ask for a quote. If you want to align the cover dates with your tax renewal first, read New CMI rules from 1 September 2026: align your cover dates with your vehicle tax

Q: When will I get my policy after buying online?
A: Once you've filled in all your details, our team will call you back to confirm them before the policy is issued.

Q: Who approves claims?
A: Underwriting and claim payments are decided by Tokio Marine Safety Insurance. As your broker, Prakanthai.com helps coordinate and follow up for you.
