Highlights: Travel insurance for students going abroad to study, with continuous cover of up to 2 years and compensation for tuition fees if they have to stop studying
Your child has a place to study abroad. Tuition, dormitory and flights have already cost a lot, and what parents worry about next is what happens if their child falls ill or has an accident there: the medical bills could run into hundreds of thousands or even millions, and who would fly over to look after them?
MSIG's TRAVEL EASY OVERSEAS STUDENT is made specifically for the study period abroad. The questions are: how do the 3 plans differ, how many months should you buy, and what conditions should you know before your child flies?
Overseas study insurance MSIG Student: who is it for, and how much is the premium?
In short: MSIG's TRAVEL EASY OVERSEAS STUDENT overseas study insurance suits students aged 13–50 who are resident in Thailand, are enrolled at a recognised institution abroad and begin their journey from Thailand. Premiums start from THB 4,700 (Student 3, up to 3 months, as of 15 October 2026). The actual premium depends on the plan and duration.

How much is MSIG overseas student insurance?
Premiums per policy, including stamp duty and VAT. Data as at 15 October 2026
| Period of cover | Student 1 / Student 2 / Student 3 (THB) |
|---|---|
| Up to 3 months | 12,200 / 6,000 / 4,700 |
| Up to 6 months | 19,950 / 9,950 / 7,450 |
| Up to 11 months | 36,850 / 18,150 / 13,750 |
| Up to 12 months | 39,900 / 19,900 / 14,900 |
| Up to 18 months | 59,850 / 29,850 / 22,350 |
| Up to 24 months | 79,800 / 39,800 / 29,800 |
Every figure is a starting premium. The full table has every month from 3 to 24 months. The actual premium depends on the plan, the duration, the information on the application form and the insurer's underwriting decision.
Worked example: a child studying a language for 11 months, choosing Student 2
- Buying 11 months costs THB 18,150 and buying 12 months costs THB 19,900, a difference of 19,900 − 18,150 = THB 1,750
- Only plans of 1 year or longer cover medical expenses in Thailand within 90 days when the student returns to Thailand temporarily and has to go back to continue studying, up to THB 200,000
- If your child studies for 2 years, buying 24 months once costs THB 39,800, the same as buying 12 months twice: 19,900 × 2 = THB 39,800, but you don't have to worry about renewing midway.
- Average for the 12-month plan 19,900 ÷ 12 = about THB 1,658 per month
This example is for illustration only. If your child studies for almost a full year and may come back to Thailand during the holidays, the THB 1,750 difference buys medical cover in Thailand that the shorter plan does not have.
Which should you choose: Student 1, 2 or 3?
Medical expenses are the first figure to compare with the cost of treatment in your destination country. For countries where treatment costs are very high, Student 1 gives medical expenses of THB 5,500,000. Student 3 has the lowest premium but does not cover flight delay or missed connections. Some institutions set a minimum insurance limit, so check with the institution before you choose.
