Premium data as of 15 October 2026 · compiled by Prakanthai.com
Underwritten by Bangkok Insurance Public Company Limited
Premiums from THB 645.21 per year for a saloon or 4-door pickup with up to 7 seats, including tax and stamp duty
Highlights: We help you check that the CMI start and end dates match your tax cycle before you pay, under the new cover-period rules that start on 1 September 2026
Your tax sticker expires at the end of next month, but your existing CMI runs out two weeks earlier. You buy the new year's CMI, then find you can't renew the tax, because the cover dates don't reach the expiry date of the new tax cycle.
What should you look at besides price when renewing CMI in 2026, and what does CMI pay for in an accident?
Renew car CMI online: who is it for, and how much does it cost?
In short: Car CMI, or road accident victims protection insurance, is compulsory insurance that every car must have in order to renew vehicle tax. It covers preliminary medical expenses of up to THB 30,000 per person, and up to THB 504,000 per person in total once it has been established that the injured person is not the party liable. It does not pay for repairs to vehicles or for property. Premiums start at THB 645.21 per year for a saloon with up to 7 seats (data as at 15 October 2026). The actual price depends on the vehicle type and the cover period.
What does car CMI cover?
Cover is in 2 parts. The first is paid straight away, without waiting to establish who is at fault. The second is paid after liability has been established.
| Coverage | Limit per person | Conditions |
|---|---|---|
| Preliminary compensation: medical expenses at actual cost | Up to THB 30,000 | No need to establish liability |
| Preliminary compensation: death, dismemberment or permanent disability | THB 35,000 | Up to THB 65,000 in total with medical expenses |
| Medical expenses for injuries | Up to THB 80,000 in total | After it is established that the person is not the liable party |
| Death or total permanent disability | THB 500,000 | After liability is established |
| Permanent disability | THB 300,000 | After liability is established |
| Loss of 1 body part / 2 or more body parts | THB 250,000 / 500,000 | As set out in the policy |
| Loss of a finger at or above the knuckle | THB 200,000 | – |
| Daily compensation when an inpatient | THB 200 per day, up to 20 days | – |
The maximum total cover is THB 504,000 per person and THB 20 million per accident in total. Preliminary compensation is part of the total limit, not added on top.
How much is car CMI in 2026?
Premium includes tax and stamp duty, for a 1-year cover period for a privately used car, as at 15 October 2026
| Vehicle type | Starting premium (THB per year) |
|---|---|
| Saloon / 4-door pickup, up to 7 seats (RY.1) | 645.21 |
| Pickup truck, up to 3 tonnes (RY.3) | 967.28 |
| Private van, more than 7 seats (RY.2) | 1,182.35 |
The actual price depends on the vehicle type, how it is used and the cover period. From 1 September 2026, if the cover period is not 1 year, the premium is calculated pro rata by day. The amount you actually pay is the one on your quote.
Worked example: if you need 18 months of CMI to match your tax cycle
- Daily premium for a saloon: 645.21 ÷ 365 = about THB 1.77 per day
- 18 months is about 548 days: 1.77 × 548 = about THB 970
- A standard 1-year period costs THB 645.21
This example is for illustration only. How the amount is rounded and the actual net total are as the insurer calculates them. The point to see is that a longer period costs more in proportion to the days, but it lines up the CMI dates with the tax dates.
Who is CMI online through Prakanthai.com for?
- Car owners whose CMI and tax sticker expire on different days and who are not sure which date to start from
- People who will renew their vehicle tax themselves online and want the cover dates to reach the expiry date of the new tax cycle
- People who want to renew CMI and compare Class 1, 2+ or 3+ in one go
- Owners of privately used saloons, pickups or vans
Who should not buy this plan yet?
- People who expect CMI to pay for car repairs: CMI does not pay for repairs to your own car, the other party's car or property. Look at voluntary insurance, such as Class 3 Chubb Eco insurance
- People who buy a short CMI period because it's cheap: if you use it to renew vehicle tax, the cover period must run continuously at least until the tax expiry date of the cycle being renewed
- Cars used for hire, with yellow plates, or RY.18 have different premiums from the private-car table. Send your registration book so our team can check the vehicle type first
- People whose existing CMI still has a long time left: CMI can be cancelled only in specified cases. Buying a second one unnecessarily may waste the premium
Limits to check before you decide
- A driver who is at fault receives no more than preliminary compensation, which means medical expenses of up to THB 30,000, and up to THB 65,000 in total including death or disability
- The THB 500,000 limit is not paid to everyone in every case. It must first be established that the accident victim is not the party liable
- New cover-period rules from 1 September 2026: the standard period is 1 year. You can ask for a shorter or longer period, up to 2 years at most, and the premium is calculated pro rata by day
- CMI can be cancelled only in specified cases: when the vehicle is withdrawn from use as the law provides, or when there is more than one CMI policy on the same vehicle. Selling the car or changing your mind is not a ground for cancellation
- Claim preliminary compensation within 180 days of the date of the loss

What do I need to send to renew CMI to match my tax cycle?
Send just 2 things
- A photo of the vehicle details page in the registration book
- The tax expiry date from your tax sticker, and your existing CMI (if you have one)
Our team will check the vehicle type and the start and end dates you should use, and send the premium back in writing within a business day. If the car has no voluntary insurance yet, we will also compare Class 3, 3+ and 2+ for you. If a plan is good value, we will tell you straight. If the conditions differ, we will explain the differences before you pay.

Frequently asked questions
I already have Class 1 insurance. Do I still need to buy CMI?
Yes. Class 1 is voluntary insurance; it cannot replace CMI and cannot be used to renew vehicle tax.
Does CMI end as soon as I sell the car?
Not immediately. The person who takes over the car is treated as the insured under the existing policy for the rest of its period.
Do electric cars need CMI?
Yes. An electric car registered for use on the road needs compulsory motor insurance just like an engine-powered car. The premium follows the vehicle type in the registration book.
Does CMI still cover me if I have no driving licence?
The rights of passengers and third parties do not disappear automatically. A driver who is the liable party receives no more than preliminary compensation, and is also separately liable under the law on driving licences.
I don't know where the other party's car has CMI. Who can I ask?
Ask Road Accident Victims Protection Company Limited on 1791 or the OIC (Office of Insurance Commission) on 1186, including where the vehicle was uninsured or it was a hit-and-run.
How many days does the insurer take to pay preliminary compensation?
Under the policy conditions, the insurer pays within 7 days of receiving the claim with complete evidence. The insurer may ask for further documents depending on the facts of the incident.
Who approves claims: Prakanthai.com or Bangkok Insurance?
Underwriting and claim payments are decided by Bangkok Insurance. As the broker, Prakanthai.com helps check the dates, issue the policy and coordinate for you.
