You have treated patients for years without a problem. Then one day a patient's relatives are unhappy with the result of treatment and sue for damages in the millions. You don't yet know whether there was any fault, but the lawyers' fees and the costs of fighting the case have already started to run.
What does medical professional liability insurance cover, what doesn't it cover, and why does continuous renewal matter?
Medical professional liability insurance: who is it for and how much is the premium?
In short: Bangkok Insurance's medical professional liability insurance suits doctors who provide treatment in Thailand and want funds in place if a claim is made against them over their professional work. It covers claims made by third parties during the insured period, and the costs of defending the case, up to THB 6,000,000. Premiums start at THB 10,440 per year (data as at 15 October 2026). The actual premium follows the quote and the insurer's decision.
What does medical professional liability insurance cover?
| Coverage | Limit | Conditions |
|---|---|---|
| Compensation claimed by third parties | Up to THB 6,000,000 | The claim is made during the period of insurance |
| Legal defence costs | Included in the cover | As per the policy conditions |
| Retroactive cover | Back to the date the insurance started | Continuous renewal required |
Bangkok Insurance states that it is ready to help from the moment an injured party makes a complaint until the case ends. See the policy schedule for the limit of each part.
How much is the premium for medical professional liability insurance?
Premiums from THB 10,440 per year, including tax and stamp duty. Data as at 15 October 2026. The actual premium is as stated in the quote and subject to the insurer's underwriting decision.
Worked example: you are sued for damages of THB 2.5 million
- Average premium per month: 10,440 ÷ 12 = THB 870
- Say the damages you have to pay under the judgment are THB 2,500,000 and the costs of defending the case are THB 300,000, a total of 2,500,000 + 300,000 = THB 2,800,000
- The total is still within the THB 6,000,000 limit, leaving 6,000,000 − 2,800,000 = THB 3,200,000
This example is for illustration only. The figures for damages and legal costs are assumptions. The amount actually paid depends on the facts, the judgment and the insurer's claim assessment. A simple rule: the costs of defending the case also use up the limit, so choose a limit that allows for both parts.
