This Grab Class 1 insurance is made specifically for cars with RY.18 plates that work for hire through apps. It covers the car, third parties and passengers, but there are conditions on car age, repairs and the excess that you should check first.

A worked example to illustrate
Japanese vs Chinese cars with the same sum insured: how big is the difference?
With a sum insured of THB 550,000, a Japanese car starts at THB 30,079.84 and a Chinese car at THB 31,154.12
31,154.12 − 30,079.84 = a difference of THB 1,074.28 per year

Frequently asked questions
Can I use my private car insurance to drive for Grab?
No. Private-use car insurance (code 110) does not cover carrying passengers for hire. A car that works through an app should take out an RY.18 plan with code 730.
What is code 730?
It is the vehicle use code in the policy for a car for hire via an electronic system, which matches cars registered as RY.18.
If a passenger is injured, what does the insurance pay?
On top of the entitlements under CMI, this plan has medical expenses of THB 50,000 and personal accident cover of THB 50,000, subject to the policy conditions.
Can a Chinese or European car be insured?
Yes. Use premium option 2, which is slightly higher than for Japanese cars from a sum insured of THB 400,000 upwards. The insurer decides the vehicle group and the sums insured it accepts.
Can I get compulsory motor insurance (CMI) at the same time?
Yes. Mention it when you ask for a quote. If you want to check that the cover dates line up with your tax renewal first, read New CMI rules from 1 September 2026: match your cover dates to your vehicle tax
