Cyber insurance

Bangkok Insurance personal cyber insurance from THB 200 per year

A single phone can be linked to Mobile Banking, your personal data, email, social media and online shops. If your data is stolen, your account is hit by a Phishing attack, or you buy or sell goods and never receive the item or the money, the damage can be done within a very short time.

Personal cyber insurance from Bangkok Insurance Public Company Limited comes in 3 plans, with premiums including tax and duty from THB 200 per year. It helps cover losses from online threats within the scope and conditions of the policy, and suits Mobile Banking users, online shoppers and online sellers.

Important before you buy: this policy does not cover every case of online fraud or money transferred to scammers. The cause of the incident, how the money was lost, the evidence and the policy terms are key factors in deciding a claim.

What is cyber insurance?

Personal cyber insurance helps ease financial loss and certain costs when the insured suffers an incident caused by a third party over the internet, as defined in the policy, such as personal data being stolen and used to steal money, a Phishing attack, cyber extortion, bullying that damages your reputation, or fraud when buying or selling goods online.

Insurance helps you deal with the aftermath of an incident, but it cannot replace prevention. You should still use hard-to-guess passwords, turn on multi-factor authentication, never share your OTP, and check the account name before every transaction.

What does cyber insurance cover?

1. Money stolen through Identity Theft or Phishing

Covers loss of money and legal defence costs when a third party steals personal data over the internet, or uses Phishing or email spoofing, and then uses that data to steal money from the insured. The incident and the loss must meet the policy conditions.

Maximum limit per policy year:

  • Plan 1: THB 20,000

  • Plan 2: THB 50,000

  • Plan 3: THB 100,000

2. Online extortion (Cyber Extortion)

Covers ransom money lost and the necessary costs of resolving cyber extortion by a third party, such as removing malware, cleaning devices, restoring data or hiring an IT consultant. The approach and the costs must be approved under the insurer's conditions.

Maximum limit, all plans: THB 5,000 per policy year

3. Online bullying (Cyber Bullying)

Covers legal defence costs and psychological treatment costs when bullying by a third party is published and damages the insured's reputation, under the policy conditions.

Maximum limit, all plans: THB 5,000 per policy year

4. Goods bought online but not received (Online Shopping)

Covers you when you have paid for goods online but the online seller does not deliver them within 30 days of the date they said they would ship. It pays the amount you actually paid, up to the plan limit. The insured must be unable to get the money back from the party responsible or any other source, and the goods must be within the scope of the policy.

Maximum limit per policy year:

  • Plan 1: THB 5,000

  • Plan 2: THB 15,000

  • Plan 3: THB 30,000

5. Goods sold online but payment not received (Online Sales)

Covered under Plan 3 only. When the insured is tricked into selling goods online, ships them to the buyer but is not paid within 30 days of shipping, the insurer will consider paying the amount actually unpaid, up to the set limit.

Maximum limit, Plan 3: THB 30,000 per policy year

Which plan should you choose?

Type of usePlan to considerReason
You use Mobile Banking and make everyday online transactionsPlan 1Basic cover for a premium of THB 200 per year
You shop online regularly, or spend more per order than the basic plan coversPlan 2Raises the money theft limit to THB 50,000 and online shopping to THB 15,000
You both buy and sell goods onlinePlan 3Money theft limit up to THB 100,000, and the only plan with online sales cover

This is only a rough guide. Choose based on the real value of your transactions, how often you buy and sell, and the largest loss you could bear yourself.

Tricked into transferring money: can you claim in every case?

Not in every case. The key distinction is that the policy covers money stolen over the internet through personal data theft (Identity Theft) or a Phishing attack/email spoofing by a third party. It does not mean that a decision to transfer money to someone because of any kind of deception is automatically covered.

An example likely to fit the scope the insurer describes: the victim is tricked into entering important details on a fake website, email, Facebook or LINE account, and the scammer then uses that information to access the account and steal money. However, actual liability depends on the facts, evidence and policy conditions of each incident.

If you are unsure whether the incident you are worried about is within scope, ask before you buy, and if something happens, notify the insurer as soon as possible.

Example incidents to understand correctly

IncidentInitial assessment
Tricked into entering details on a fake website, then the criminal uses them to steal moneyMay meet the Phishing conditions if the facts and evidence are complete
Personal data stolen and used to transfer money out of your accountMay meet the Identity Theft conditions
Data stolen, but no money lost yetDoes not automatically mean a claim under the money theft section
Bought goods, but the seller did not ship them within 30 days as requiredMay meet the Online Shopping conditions
Goods received but not as described, the wrong model, or damaged in transitNot a case of “non-delivery” for the purpose of this cover
Problems after buying digital goods, tickets or gift cardsThe insurer states these goods are not covered under Online Shopping
Abused in a private chat, but nothing published for others to seeDoes not yet meet the criteria for reputational damage as the insurer explains them
Seller shipped the goods but was not paid within 30 daysCovered under Plan 3 only, and must meet the policy conditions

This table is an explanation to help you understand; it is not a guarantee of claim payment. The insurer's decision depends on the facts, documents and policy conditions.

Underwriting conditions

  • Applicants aged 15–100

  • Thai nationals living in Thailand

  • Each insured may hold only 1 policy

  • Period of cover 1 year, as per the dates in the policy schedule

  • The incident must occur during the period of insurance and within the territory stated in the policy

  • The insurer only pays for loss or damage that cannot be recovered from the party responsible or any other source

What should you do after a cyber incident?

  1. Stop the damage immediately: change your passwords, sign out on all devices, freeze the accounts or cards involved, and contact your bank or service provider as soon as possible

  2. Keep the evidence before deleting anything: save screenshots, URLs, emails, chat messages, bank statements, proof of payment, orders and delivery details

  3. Report it to the police: ask for a copy of the police report and have it certified as a true copy

  4. Notify Bangkok Insurance: during business hours call +66 2 285 8888 and press 3 then 6, or outside business hours call 1620

  5. Send the documents for the relevant cover section and keep copies of every document to follow up

The basic documents the insurer lists are the cyber insurance claim form, a copy of your national ID card, a certified copy of the police report, and a copy of your bank book page for receiving the claim payment. The insurer may ask for incident-specific or additional documents as needed.

Frequently asked questions

How much does cyber insurance cost?

There are 3 plans, priced at THB 200, THB 500 and THB 1,150 per year. These figures include VAT and stamp duty.

Does cyber insurance cover the money in my bank account?

It covers loss of money when money is stolen over the internet through Identity Theft or Phishing by a third party, as defined and conditioned in the policy, with limits of THB 20,000–100,000 depending on the plan. It does not cover every case of money transferred to scammers.

Bought something online and it never arrived: can I claim?

You may be able to claim when you have paid and the online seller does not deliver within 30 days of the date they said they would ship. The goods must be within scope, the insured must have followed up reasonably, and the money must not be recoverable from any other source.

Received goods that are not as described: can I claim?

That is not non-delivery. The insurer explains that Online Shopping cover is intended for cases where goods are not received, not where goods do not match the order or description.

Which plan should online sellers choose?

Consider Plan 3, as it is the only plan that covers online sales where you ship goods and are not paid within 30 days under the conditions, and it also gives the highest online money theft limit, THB 100,000.

Can I buy more than one policy?

No. The conditions state that each insured may hold only 1 policy, and each plan has a 1-year period of cover.

Who is the insurer, and who decides claims?

Bangkok Insurance Public Company Limited is the insurer and decides claims. Prakanthai.com acts as the non-life insurance broker and helps you choose a plan or find the right channel to coordinate through.

What documents do I need to make a claim?

The basic documents are the claim form, a copy of your national ID card, a certified copy of the police report and a copy of your bank book page. The insurer may ask for section-specific evidence, such as bank statements, screenshots, orders, proof of payment or further delivery details.

Choose cover that suits how you use the internet

If you regularly use Mobile Banking, or buy or sell goods online, consider both your largest transaction amounts and your own kind of risk before choosing a plan.
