Class 3 insurance for vehicle type RY.18 for Grab/Bolt: what does it cover?
Class 3 insurance for vehicle type RY.18 for app-based passenger cars: what does it cover?
If you drive for an app, your “vehicle use type” and your “policy” should match from day one
A car that carries passengers for a fare has different risks and patterns of use from an ordinary private car. If the vehicle use stated in the policy does not match how the car is actually used, it may affect how cover is assessed when something happens.
That is why Class 3 insurance for RY.18 is designed for hire cars carrying up to 7 passengers booked through an electronic system, such as jobs taken through an app, with a focus on liability for third-party bodily injury, death and property damage up to the limits in the policy.
Before you pay, let Prakanthai.com check whether your car, fuel type, registered owner and use meet the criteria.

The 30-second summary
Suits people who carry passengers through an app and want insurance that matches how they use the car
Covers third-party liability up to the limits, but does not pay to repair the insured's own car after a collision
The plan offered on this page does not accept EVs and has conditions on vehicle type, owner and area of use
Compulsory motor insurance (CMI) is compulsory cover separate from Class 3 insurance; check whether the price already includes CMI
Buying insurance alone does not automatically make your car an RY.18 vehicle; the driver and car still have to meet the requirements of the Department of Land Transport (DLT) and the platform
What is RY.18?
RY.18 is the term for a car for hire through an electronic system carrying up to 7 passengers, under the Department of Land Transport (DLT) registration framework. Drivers who take jobs through a platform should check everything: the vehicle registration type, the relevant driving licence, platform documents, markings and any other conditions under the rules in force on the date they apply.
Remember: “buying the right type of insurance” is only one part of it; it does not guarantee that your RY.18 registration will succeed or that you can start driving straight away.
What does Class 3 insurance for RY.18 cover?

How does it differ from Class 3 insurance for a private car?
| Point | Class 3, private car | Class 3, RY.18 |
|---|---|---|
| Vehicle use | Private use as stated in the policy | Carrying passengers booked through an electronic system, subject to conditions |
| Third-party liability | Covered up to the limits and conditions | Covered up to the limits and conditions of the RY.18 plan |
| Repairs to your own car | Not covered | Not covered |
| Can one replace the other? | Don't assume they are interchangeable | The vehicle use type must match the policy |
If you use a private-car policy for a car for hire without declaring its use correctly, this may lead to disputes or affect your right to cover. Send your current policy schedule to our staff to check before you renew or change plans.
Which cars should be sent for an underwriting check?
This reference plan is suitable for a check when the car has the following features
A private saloon with black plates, owned by an individual
An internal-combustion car in a vehicle group set by the insurer, in standard condition
Used to sign up as a partner to carry passengers through an app
The driver accepts that Class 3 insurance does not repair their own car after a collision
In the following cases, don't pay yet; send your details to be checked first
EVs, hybrids or cars with a modified fuel system
Cars under finance or hire purchase, or where the keeper's name does not match the applicant's
Cars registered to a juristic person, metered taxis, or cars fitted or decorated to look like a taxi
Cars used to carry goods or deliver parcels, or used in any way other than carrying passengers under the plan
Cars used or registered in areas where the insurer may restrict cover
The plan referenced on this page does not accept EVs. If yours is an electric car, tell our team in your first message so we can look for another plan that matches your use, though we cannot guarantee there is a plan for every car.
Can a car under finance get Class 3 insurance for RY.18?
Two things need checking separately
Whether the insurer accepts the car and its use
Whether the hire-purchase or finance agreement allows it, and what insurance class it requires
Even if the insurer accepts Class 3 RY.18 cover, it does not mean the finance company will always allow you to change the vehicle use type or accept this class of cover. Hire-purchasers should get confirmation from the registered owner or the finance company before going ahead.
Is CMI already included in the price?
Compulsory motor insurance (CMI) is compulsory, while Class 3 insurance is voluntary motor insurance. The two do different jobs, so check the quote carefully to see
Whether the quoted premium is for Class 3 insurance only or already includes CMI
Whether your existing CMI is valid for the car's current type or needs to be changed
Whether the start and end dates of both policies fit your registration plans
The Prakanthai team will show you the items and amounts separately to check before you pay.
